St. Francis Food Pantries & Shelters - Doodle for Hunger XI

lead story

Food For Thought
As we enter our busy late-Fall fundraising season – which includes our annual Doodle for Hunger (November 2), Run for Hunger (November 5) and Cycle for Hunger (December 3) events, not to mention our annual Texas Hold 'Em & Casino Night (December 7) – it's a good time to reflect on the wonderful our accomplishments and community events we helped with this past summer.

We ensured HOPE Community Services – led by director Carol Troum and her team of volunteers – had a fun and festive holiday by sponsoring a 4th of July Celebration! Hot dogs, hamburgers, ice cream, patriotic decorations and music – a wonderful time was had by all the needy patrons of HOPE’s soup kitchen in New Rochelle.

In late July, we sponsored the first-of-its-kind July Festival at St. John's Church, near Penn Station. Volunteers – coordinated by Ingrid Gerber and June Tang-How – set up the church hall like a market, where local homeless and other people in need could “shop” for necessities, and enjoy plenty of delicious food.

We are proud to work with Dr. Kathy Gibson and the Grandparent's Advocacy Program (GAP) and contribute funds to help them experience exciting outings. Most of them are on a fixed income, and legal guardians of their grandchildren, so any help they can get is greatly appreciated. Recently we were able to help send the GAP group to the Dempsey Community Center Theatre to see an inspiring Gospel-themed musical.

Our annual Back to School Picnic took place in late August and was the perfect send-off to summer and welcome back to school! Sponsored by Macy's, with school supplies provided by Deb van der Heyden of JLL, this afternoon of food, fun, and friendship set the tone for a wonderful 2017-18 school year
